Dear Parents,
During the last 2 months of the 2011-12 school year our staff researched, visited schools, listened to presentations and had very thoughtful discussions about the focus we want Tavelli to take for years to come. We looked at our mission of..Tavelli is a school of academics, character and wellness. Our mission is to ENGAGE students for academic and social success. We will INSPIRE a community of diverse learners through collaboration and accountability so our children SUCCEED in a global society. As we explored the different philosophies of practice in education, our staff voted that we are going to brand ourselves as a S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) School. Here are the results of our staff vote: IB-6, Core Knowledge-6, STEM or STEAM 24, Do nothing 3.
S.T.E.A.M. is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. A STEAM school focuses on these subjects to help our nation's youth gain the skills required to succeed in today's challenging world. This includes the ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and drive advancements in science, math and technology; while using the Arts to look at learning and problem solving with a creative lens.
What is S.T.E.A.M?
S.T.E.A.M is an effort to help prepare our students for our workforce for tomorrow. All sectors of the workforce-from entry level jobs to more advanced positions are requiring workers to have a greater capacity to think critically, work independently and apply an ever widening set of skills required for the work force.
Scientific Literacy is the ability to use science knowledge and processes to understand the natural world; science in life and health, science in Earth and environment and science in technology. Our current Science Lab is a great first step to building this scientific learning.
Technological literacy is using technology in today’s world. Students use technology every day in their world and we want to build and expand on their knowledge to make technology work for them. Currently, our 5th grade students have been using netbooks in their learning. Students are researching, problem solving, blogging, emailing and involved in many other activities using technology.
Engineering literacy is finding the answers to the “how” and “why” things are in our world. This inquiry approach helps students to ask key questions to real world issues. Our hope is to work side by side with engineers to help answer some of these questions.
Arts bring the creativity and the right brain thinking into learning. Being able to creatively look at our world creates global thinkers. Currently, we have many activities in the ARTS happening at Tavelli. Look around our school at all the great art work. We have very talented students. Many of our students are participating in after school activities including percussion, guitar, theatre, chess club, and Spanish.
Mathematical literacy is the ability of students to analyze, reason, and communicate ideas effectively as they solve and interpret mathematical problems. Math is one of our school improvement goals. Our staff is excited to receive more professional development with math teaching practices.
As we embark on the STEAM concepts, we are also going to keep embracing the great wellness effort that our school is known for, along with our character development. This is an exciting time for Tavelli. If you have any questions for our staff or me please feel free to ask.
Thanks again for all that you do!
